Moving Plates
earth scienceThe Earth's outer shell is broken into large plates that move very slowly. Where plates pull apart, molten rock rises to (1) new crust, as along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Where they (2), one plate may sink beneath the other, producing deep ocean trenches and chains of volcanoes. Plates can also slide past each other, and the stress that builds up (3) their edges is released suddenly in earthquakes. The theory explaining these movements was not widely (4) until the 1960s.
