The future of office work

Compare viewpoints across four writers

Expert A, management consultant

A discusses productivity at home, young employees, city centres and whether hybrid working will last.

A

The data from the past few years is now hard to argue with: people working from home get at least as much done as they did in the office, and often more, because they lose less time to commuting and interruptions. Where I do have concerns is over young employees. So much of what I learned early in my career came from overhearing how senior colleagues handled difficult calls, and that simply does not happen on a video link. As for city centres, I am not worried. Businesses that depended on office workers will adapt, as businesses always have. But I do not believe that the current hybrid arrangement, with staff splitting their week between home and office, will survive. Within a decade, I expect most large employers to have called their staff back full-time.
