Word formation
For questions 1-8, read the text below. Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line.
Not long ago, second-hand furniture was seen as little more than a cheap (1) to buying new. Today, restoring old pieces has become a hobby with a large and (2) following. Much of the appeal lies in the (3) of furniture made from solid wood: a table built a century ago will often outlast anything bought from a flat-pack store. Most repairs are straightforward. Wobbly chairs can be taken apart and glued to (4) the joints, and many scratches can be hidden with a little wax. Experienced restorers do, however, warn against (5). Stripping old varnish too quickly, or with the wrong chemicals, can cause (6) damage to the wood beneath. Even an (7) beginner can achieve good results, provided they work slowly and test every product on a hidden area first. And there are few things more (8) than bringing a neglected piece of furniture back to life.
