Open cloze

For questions 1-8, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap.

In the past year, many offices have tried to persuade staff to come back in at least three days a week, yet the debate about what “normal” work should look like has not gone away. Some managers argue that a shared space is where new recruits learn fastest, because they can overhear conversations and ask questions that would otherwise be missed 1. a call. Others, who have built their routines around school runs and cheaper commuting, say that they have never been more productive than when they are trusted to manage 2. own time. Meanwhile, universities are asking whether students, who have grown up 3. screens, still need lectures delivered 4. the same way as before, or whether blended courses can offer more choice without lowering standards. Even travel has changed: people will book a short break 5. they can work from a hotel room, although they may not admit it 6. their boss. What seems clear is that technology can enable flexibility, but it cannot replace the sense of belonging that comes 7. being part of something bigger 8. yourself.
