Reading Passage

Lena lives in a small flat in the city, but she wants to grow her own food. She has a sunny balcony with space for a few pots. Last spring she decided to start a small garden there. She did not know much about plants, so she planned to begin with something easy.

On Saturday morning she went to a garden shop near her home. She bought three pots, some soil, and seeds for tomatoes and lettuce. The shop assistant told her to water the plants a little every day, but not too much. He also said, “Put the pots where they can get sun for at least five hours.”

At home, Lena filled the pots with soil and planted the seeds carefully. She wrote the names on small pieces of paper and put them in the pots, so she would not forget. Every evening after work she checked the soil with her finger. If it felt dry, she gave the plants some water. She also opened the balcony door to let fresh air in.

After two weeks, small green leaves appeared. Lena was very excited and took photos to send to her brother. One day it rained for a long time, and she worried about the plants. She moved the pots closer to the wall, so they stayed a little drier. In the summer she picked her first tomatoes and made a salad with the lettuce.

Now Lena’s balcony looks brighter and she feels calmer when she sits there. She still buys food from the supermarket, but she enjoys eating something she grew herself. Next year she wants to try herbs like basil and mint, because they smell nice and are useful for cooking.
